Turkey - SMART

In a speech during his visit to injured soldiers, the Turkish Defense Minister, Nurettin Canikli, emphasized that the Olive Branch and Euphrates Shield Operations, led by Turkey in Syria, did not cause any civilian casualties.

Canikli pointed out that it is impossible to avoid causing civilian casualties sometimes, adding that the Turkish forces acted very carefully to avoid causing such casualties. Canikli said that if Turkey had not acted in such manner, it could have gained control of Afrin in a few weeks, "as others have done," indicating the International Coalition.

The Turkish Minister of Defense said that the official statistics of the International Coalition, led by the United States, show that more than 900 civilians were killed in its operations in Syria, pointing out that the real numbers exceed even that.

Canikli also said: "The International Coalition's operation in the Syrian city of ar-Raqqah massively destroyed the city, killing hundreds, and maybe thousands of civilians."

The Turkish Army announced that three of its fighters were killed by landmine explosions left behind in the Afrin area by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG); the Turkish Army did not specify the exact place where the fighters were killed.

Last Friday, activists documented the killing of eight civilians, including women and children, from an artillery bombing by the Turkish Army and the Olive Branch Operation's factions on the city of Afrin. Earlier this month, an artillery bombing on the city killed four civilians, including two children, and injured 10 others. Hundreds of families were displaced to Free Syrian army (FSA)-, or loyalist forces-controlled areas.

Hundreds of Turkish Army and FSA fighters have been killed in the clashes with the YPG during the two months of the Olive Branch Operation, after which the Turkish Army and the FSA gained control of the city of Afrin and its surrounding villages and towns.
