Aleppo - SMART

On Monday night and Tuesday morning, Turkish artillery and warplanes shelled the outposts of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian government forces in the city of Tall Rifat and the village of Um Housh in Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria.

On Tuesday, a military commander in the Third Division of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Rami Abu Bahjat, stated to SMART that for the first time, Turkish warplanes bombed the YPG outposts in the villages of Um Housh, al-Wahshia, and Ihris. Abu Bahjat added that Turkish artillery also shelled Syrian government forces’ outposts near the city of Tall Rifat.

Um Housh village is considered one of the most significant outposts of the YPG in Northern Aleppo. The YPG withdrew from the Afrin area and stationed in the village following clashes with the Turkish Army and the FSA factions, according to Abu Bahjat.

Abu Bahjat noted that the Turkish bombings were in retaliation of YPG fighters' setting fire to houses in Arab villages. Abu Bahjat believes that the battle for Tall Rifat and surrounding villages is "just around the corner".

On Sunday, another military commander in the Third Division of the FSA said that the battle for Tall Rifat is likely to start in early April 2018. The commander added that they will attack the Arab towns and villages controlled by the YPG, expecting to gain control of the area in one day.

Earlier, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the next stage in the Olive Branch Operation is to gain control of Tall Rifat. Erdogan said this after promising demonstrators that he will respond to their questions and demands.
