Daraa - SMART

The staff of al-Bayan school for children of martyrs and detainees in the city of Nawa (40 kilometers north of Daraa), Southern Syria, complained about receiving little external support, which threatens the longevity of its work.

Mourad al-Namrini, Secretary of the school, told SMART that the teachers have not received salaries since the beginning of the second semester. He added that the school needs nearly one million Syrian pounds per month to meet both its material needs, and the costs of transportation.

Al-Namrini called on humanitarian organizations and local civil bodies to contribute to supporting the school, which currently has 530 students, so that it may be able to continue running. He also suggested that funds could be secured through personal donations.

One of the teachers, Muhammad Suwaydani, reported that they will continue to work without prior payment, and regardless of whether or not they receive support. He further mentioned some of the school's logistical needs such as printers, papers and books.

The Official at the Orphans and Children of Detainees Committee in the town of Maraba, Daraa, reported that pressure from Gulf countries on the provincial donors, played an important factor in explaining the low level support for orphans and children of detainees.
