Hama - SMART

Working groups in Mourek and Lahaya, Northern Hama, issued a statement of suspending schools indefinitely. The groups suspended the schools after Jaysh al-Izza and the Ahrar Al Sham Movement, who administer the Mourek crossing, broke their promises toward the groups.

The statement included the signatures of the staff of the Martyrs of Mourek school and the Shura council of Halfaya and Mourek. The statement reported that they will suspend schools since they have been working for free, during the past period.

The statement also reported that the promises administrators of the Mourek crossing made to the residents of establishing services in the city, was only anesthetic. The teachers volunteered for seven months, which led to a build up of debts. The teachers will now work in farming, since it is the agriculture period.

Last Friday, the people of Mourek protested against the monopoly of resources by the Mourek Crossing administration. The administration have left the city with no services or infrastructure, coinciding with the absence of humanitarian organizations and promises by the administration to respond to the residents’ demands.

The crossing is located between the towns of Mourek and Soran, on the Damascus-Aleppo international highway. Civil administration controls the crossing after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham withdrew from the city and the checkpoint. The checkpoint is a commercial crossing between government-controlled and liberated areas.

Last November, Syrian government forces and Tahrir al-Sham opened the checkpoint for trade movements; it is the first time since February 2014. The checkpoint opened after Tahrir al-Sham gained control over the village of Abu Dali, Northeastern Hama. The village was a commercial crossing and an exchange market for fuel and goods between Syrian government and military factions, as is the crossing of al-Madiq castle in the Western Suburbs of Hama.
