Rif Dimashq governorate - SMART

On Friday, Russian media reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense announced an agreement on Jaysh al-Islam's exit from the besieged area of Douma in Eastern Ghouta. Jaysh al-Islam is one of the most prominent Islamic formations in Syria. Allied with the Free Syrian Army, it is fighting against the al-Nusra Front, the Islamic State, and loyalist forces.

Interfax news agency and Russia Today quoted Russia's chief of staff on their websites, as follows: "Today, an agreement has been reached with the leaders of illegal armed formations so that they may withdraw fighters and their families from the city of Douma soon."

The SMART team is trying to communicate with leaders of Jaysh al-Islam for a comment on the Russian announcement.

A few days ago, the leader of the Jaysh al-Islam, Muhammad Alloush, told SMART, "Negotiations are ongoing. Great efforts are being made in order to reach an equitable solution for stopping the bloodshed. We have decided not to leave Ghouta, thus things are to continue within the framework of negotiations".

The negotiations in Douma, controlled by Jaysh al-Islam, have been met with media silence. This coincides with the completion of the agreement to evacuate civilians and al-Rahman Legion fighters from central sectors of Eastern Ghouta. Earlier, thousands of civilians and fighters from the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement exited from the city of Harasta under a similar agreement.
