Turkey - SMART

Saudi crown prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, wants the US military to maintain a presence in Syria, stopping Iran from continuing to expand its presence there.

During an interview with Time magazine, Bin Salman said that the presence of US in Syria is the last effort in stopping Iran from expanding its presence. Bin Salman considered that the withdrawal of US troops from Deir ez-Zor would allow Iran to establish the Shiite Crescent, that leads from Beirut through Syria and Iraq, in to Tehran.

Bin Salman added: "Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not likely to be toppled"; yet he has expressed hopes that Assad will not serve Iran’s interests.

Iran has supported the Syrian regime and provided dozens of militias that seized large areas in Syria, especially in the Damascus perimeter and in the Syrian Desert, Central and Eastern Syria.

On Thursday, the US President, Donald Trump, said that the US will withdraw from Syria 'very soon'. The US Department of State denied knowing anything about these plans.

US troops were deployed to Syria, under the name of the "International Coalition", to fight against the Islamic State; they operate in Northern and Northeastern Syria.
