Turkey - SMART

The United States froze more than $200 million in funds for reconstruction efforts in Syria.

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that the White House ordered the State Department to freeze funds pledged by the United States for reconstruction efforts in Syria at a meeting of the International Coalition in Kuwait.

The officials have warned that the cessation of fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, after the SDF (allied with the US) has become busy in clashes with Turkey, has helped ISIS to rearrange its ranks. This raises the possibility of ISIS re-emergence, thus posing a threat to the United States.

Earlier, Trump announced his intention to withdraw US troops from Syria "very soon and leave Syria to others."

Saudi Arabia soon expressed its concerns about the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. Saudi Arabia also expressed, through the words of Crown Prince Mohammed ibn Salman, its desire to keep US troops  in order to confront Iran.
