Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, the US national security official said that his country could be launched a missile strike against the Syrian government, due to the chemical attack that has been carried out on the city of Duma in Eastern Ghouta of the capital, Damascus.

On Saturday-evening, at least 40 civilians were killed, and hundreds were suffocated after the Syrian government’s warplanes bombed an attack of poisonous gas on the city of Duma, according to activists and medical sources, local and international bodies condemn the massacre.

In response to a question in a television interview about the possibility of bombing a strike against the Syrian government, the Adviser, Thomas Bosert, said ” I can not subjugate anything (...) These pictures are horrifying, and during this stage, we are discussing the attack,” according to New York Times.

Bosert pointed out that the discussions took place on yesterday-evening and this morning between the US President, Donald Trump and the team of national security advisers on how to respond to the attack.

Republican Senator, Lindsey Graham said that “if the US president did not abide his statements, he would look weak, facing Russia and Iran,” and he described it as the crucial moment.

Trump said in tweets posted on his official Twitter account that “the chief of the Syrian government, in which he described him as the animal, would pay the heavy price for launching the chemical attack on the city.

The newspaper quoted the US Navy official as he said that “the battleships loaded with cruise missiles were in the Mediterranean in a routine long-term mission, and they did not receive orders to approach the Syrian coast or any preparation for any strike.”

During the US Air Command conference, one official said “there were no imminent signs of any operation. At the same time, he added and warned by saying that “things may change very quickly,” according to the newspaper.

The newspaper pointed out that only 63 hours were between the chemical attack carried out by the Syrian regime on the city of Khan Sheikun on April 4 last year and the American response which led to the bombing of Shaareat airport at the time.

French Foreign Minister Yves Le Drian said earlier on Monday that his country's president, Emmanuel MacRoon, said he could launch a unilateral strike in case of a "deadly" chemical weapons attack in Syria.

On Sunday, the British mission to the United Nations expected an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council tomorrow to discuss the chemical attack on the city of Duma.
