Turkey - SMART

The French President Emmanuel Macron and the US President Donald Trump demanded a firm response to the Syrian government’s attack on Douma city in Eastern Ghouta, Damascus.

On Monday night/Tuesday morning, the French government stated that the two leaders had discussed the attack in a second telephone conversation, and had agreed that the international community's response should be firm, according to Agence France-Presse, AFP.

The British newspaper, The Times, reported pressure from British ministers and officials on Prime Minister Theresa May to join a possible US-French military strike against the loyalist forces in Syria.

The newspaper noted the conduct of officials in the British Ministry of Defense, the careful research of military capabilities that can be provided by London, the Tomahawk missiles that could be used, and the Royal Air Force.

On Monday, Trump announced that in some hours he would make a decision to respond strongly to the attack. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, also stressed that her country would respond regardless of whether the UN Security Council decides to or not.

On Saturday evening/Sunday morning, dozens of civilians were killed and hundreds more were injured by a poison gas attack launched by the Syrian government on Douma city, according to activists and medical sources. Most local and international bodies have condemned the massacre.

Washington fired a missile strike at the Shuaiyrat military airport after the Syrian government launched a sarin gas attack on the city of Khan Sheikhoun on Idlib in April last year.
