Syria - SMART

On Wednesday, the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Syrian pound rose rapidly in various Syrian provinces in light of media expectations of an approaching US military strike against the Syrian government.

The highest decline was recorded in the Idlib governorate where the exchange rate reached 480 Syrian pounds, after rising to 420 Syrian pounds yesterday morning. This occurred amid varying exchange rates in the province, in addition to the reluctance of some cashiers and parents to buy and sell currencies.

In nearby Aleppo, the exchange rate of the US dollar reached 490 Syrian pounds, up by 25 pounds from the exchange rate the previous day. Analysts and bankers have linked this increase with the approaching date for the possible US military strike on Syria.

The purchase price of the dollar in the province of Daraa is 480 Syrian pounds compared to 485 pounds for sale, with the expectations of exchange stores to reach 490 within the next few hours. Civilians and traders started to buy after it was 450 Syrian pounds yesterday, and 430 Syrian pounds the day before yesterday.

A rise in the dollar exchange rate was also recorded in al-Hasakah, which is controlled by the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, and similar prices recorded in the markets of Idlib of 480 Syrian pounds for purchase and an increase of five pounds for sale after it being around 452 Syrian pounds only yesterday and 442 the day before.

The economic impact of the suspected US strike on Syria has not only been limited to the Syrian economy, but also on Wednesday, the indices of US stock markets decreased after the US President Donald Trump threatened to launch strikes against the Syrian government in Syria.

The Associated Press reported that the Dow Jones industrial average fell by a percentage of seven thousand, which is equivalent to 158 points to reach 24247 points. The Nasdaq index fell by 18 points to a percentage of three per thousand. The S&P 500 index fell 11 points by five per thousand.

On Wednesday, the air traffic in the Eastern Mediterranean region was affected as international airlines changed routes over Syria and areas close to their airspace, after receiving calls for caution due to the possibility of military airstrikes.

The US President Donald Trump has threatened to launch smart missile strikes on the Syrian government’s positions, as punishment for its use of chemical weapons in the city of Douma, Eastern Damascus, which has caused significant deterioration of it's relations with Russia, the latter of which is the Syrian government's most prominent ally.
