Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, international airlines changed their air routes over Syria and areas close to its airspace after calls for caution of possible military strikes in the next 72 hours, coinciding with United States escalating threats.

Airlines from several countries, notably the U.S., United Kingdom, France and Germany, have warned airline companies not to enter Syrian airspace. The European air safety organization Eurocontrol has called on airlines to be cautious in the eastern Mediterranean because of possible airstrikes in Syria.

Eurocontrol posted on its official website that the U.S. may use air-to-surface missiles in the next 72 hours, and there might be a disruption of wireless navigation devices.

Major airlines have already changed their routes, such as Air France, EasyJet and Lufthansa. However, other airlines have indicated that they will continue their regular flights with more caution and surveillance, such as Ryanair, British Airways, and Emirates.

According to FlightRadar24, a flight monitoring site, the Syrian airspace was almost empty of any flights around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, except for a Syrian Airlines flight from Damascus International Airport and a Middle East Airline flight from Beirut to Amman.

On Wednesday, U.S. stocks fell after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to launch strikes against the Syrian government in Syria. The U.S. dollar has decreased to 65 against the Russian ruble, down 2 percent.

This development coincides with the escalating tensions between the U.S. and Russia. The U.S. may use sophisticated missiles to strike Syria. Russian states that it will drop all missiles targeting Syria.

The U.S. threats came in response to the Syrian government’s chemical massacre in the city of Douma, Eastern Damascus, last Saturday. The massacre killed and wounded hundreds of civilians. Most international parties condemn the massacre, and some promise to respond to it.
