The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, warned of a humanitarian disaster if the government forces attempted to seize Idlib, Northern Syria. He also added that the Russian protection of Assad cannot be justified.

Le Drian said that there are 2 million inhabitants, including hundreds of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons who were evacuated from the areas the government has seized.

Le Drian warned of a new humanitarian disaster, after Iranian statements indicated that Idlib will be the next target. He added that Idlib’s fate should be settled by a political process that includes disarming the militias.

The minister said that now Russia should pressure Assad to find a solution for the crisis, adding that “Bashar al Assad is the one impeding the process.”

Le Drian said that Russia is denying the reality in Syria. The Russian denied that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons in 2013 and in 2015, adding that the Russian protection of Assad cannot be justified.

France, the United Kingdom, and the United States adopted a U.N. Security Council draft resolution for Syria. The resolution requires establishing a new investigating mechanism and to send humanitarian aid. The U.N. Security Council denied a draft resolution adopted by Russia, which condemned the attacks on government bases in Syria.
