Turkey - SMART

On Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced that Iraq launched raids on the sites of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Syrian territory.

The media office of al-Abadi reported, "The heroic Iraqi forces carried out deadly airstrikes on sites of ISIS terrorist gang in Syria at the border with Iraq," without mentioning the exact place, according to Iraqi news agency.

Earlier this month, al-Abadi said, "ISIS is located in Eastern Syria on the Iraqi border, and if they threaten the security of Iraq, I will take all necessary measures to prevent them."

In December last year, al-Abadi announced restoring all Iraqi territory from ISIS after months of battles. The battles ended in seizing the city of Mosul, the most important strongholds of ISIS in the country, and other cities.

ISIS lost most of the areas it had controlled in Syria after military campaigns by the Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by the International Coalition and the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army factions. ISIS' controlled areas have become limited to small enclaves in al-Hasakah and Deir Ez-Zor.
