Aleppo - SMART

A landmine, remnant from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), killed two civilians in the village of Yaki, Sharan District, 29 kilometers north of Afrin, Northern Syria.

Activists reported that the YPG planted the landmine before withdrawing from the village. The mine exploded in the victim's car while passing through the area. The victims are from Azaz, Northern Aleppo.

The landmines planted by the YPG have killed several civilians, Free Syrian Army and Turkish Army fighters in Afrin and its suburbs. The media office of Darat Azza issued a circular warning the civilians from going to these areas until removing all landmines.

On January 20, 2018, the Turkish Chief of Staff announced launching a military operation in Afrin against the YPG, under the name of the Olive Branch operation; under which they gained control over Afrin, its towns and most of the villages surrounding it.
