Turkey, SMART

On Sunday, a delegation of the protracted negotiations committee of Riyadh 2 Conference visited Oman as a part of a tour, which includes Arab and foreign countries regardless of the countries' different positions towards the Syrian government.

Yusuf Bin Alawi, Omani foreign minister, received Nasr al-Hariri, the head of the committee along with the delegation. The delegation discussed with Bin Alawi the recent field updates in Syria and the efforts of a diplomatic solution, according to a brief statement of the committee.

Alice Mufareg, a member of the committee, started saying,” our current strategy is to hold periodical meetings and contact all countries supporting the Syrian government, neutral countries, and countries, which are called Syrian Peoples’ friends.”

Mufareg added that the committee initiated the tour by visiting Algeria in March. Algeria is considered a pro-Syrian government country. Mufareg said that Oman is of a moderate position towards Syria and is “the center of Middle East’s decision making.” Mufareg added,” our visit to Oman aims at affecting the Arab League to resume “absented” role in the Syrian case.”

Mufareg said that dependence on the West was fruitless, calling upon the Arab League to propose initiatives and a detailed outline for the United Nations resolution 2254, which is based on Geneva 1 to enhance diplomatic solution in Syria.

Mufareg added that activation of the role of the Arab League is required so as Russia does not monopolize the Syrian case and due to the insufficient political process in Sochi Conference and the military Astana Talks.

Mufareg noted that Iran is an affecting state in the Syrian case through Tehran’s negative role and military support to the Syrian government to make demographic changes because Iran’s position is “ideological to achieve the Persian dream” not like Russia, whose interests are economic and Moscow wants to impose military arrogance.”

On Nov.22, 2017, Staffan De Mistura, the United Nations’ envoy to Syria, delivered a speech before Riyadh 2 Conference, saying that the Syrian opposition delegation in Geneva conference was ready to negotiate without preconditions to implement the UN 2254 resolution.

The visit coincides with the Syrian government forces displacing civilians and fighters from Eastern Ghouta and the Eastern Qalamoun area following the chemical massacre in the city of Douma, killing 85 civilians and injured 1200 others.
