Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, the Russian "central channel of the Hmeimim military base" in the Latakia countryside announced that drones attacked the base on Tuesday night, adding that the base managed to destroy all the planes. No damage to the base was reported.

The base's semiofficial Facebook page quoted the base's spokesperson, Alexander Ivanov, saying that the Hmeimim base radars monitored small aerial targets near the base and that the anti-aircraft weapons destroyed them all. There were no casualties or material damage reported in the Russian base.

Ivanov also said that jeopardizing the base's security will lead to "undesired consequences," as Ivanov said. The Russian base added that these attacks do not pose a serious threat to the Russian soldiers or to the equipment of the air base, "but the real threat lies in breaching the air sovereignty of the base," according to officials.

The page also quoted a Russian Ministry of Defense official, Vladimir Nitribov, saying that these attacks confirm that there are individuals in the areas under the loyalist forces' control that work for what he called "terrorist organizations that seek to shake the stability in the area."

On the 8th of last January, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Hmeimim air base in Latakia and the seaport of Tartus were attacked, saying that "the Hmeimim base and the Russian forces support base in Tartus were attacked using unmanned airplanes that were destroyed without causing casualties or material damage."
