Unknown gunmen kill nine members of Islamist battalions in Idlib

On Thursday, unknown shooters shot dead two leaders and seven members of Islamist battalions in Idlib, Northern Syria.

Local activists reported that the unknown gunmen shot the car of the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), nicknamed Abu al-Ward Kafrbetikh, killing him and wounding his escorts near the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man, Southern Idlib.

The activists added that unknown shooters also killed three members of the Islamic Party of Turkestan on the road between the villages of Armanaz and Meles, northwest of Idlib.

Three members of the Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib Brigades were also killed by unknown people near the town of Maarrat Masreen. The members of the Brigades are from the city of Zabadani in Rif Dimashq, people of which were displaced to Idlib about two years ago.

A leader of the al-Ahrar Army, nicknamed Abu Salim Benesh, was killed by unknown gunmen on the outskirts of the town of Bensh near Idlib. Unknown also died a member of a military faction and wounded another in the village of Abyan.

The assassinations came two days after an agreement was reached between the HTS and the Syrian Liberation Front and the Sukour al-Sham brigades to end the fighting that lasted several months.

Bombings of explosive devices, car bombs and assassination attempts have recently taken place in Idlib. Most of the explosions targeted military leaders and fighters in the Free Syrian Army and Islamist battalions, killing and wounding dozens of them.
