Aleppo - SMART

Several sources report that the latest clashes between the opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian Liberation Front in Northern Syria killed 1,000 fighters and captured hundreds.

The HTS is an opposition group previously known as al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Deen, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Syrian Liberation Front is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. HTS is the main rival of the Syrian Liberation Front in Northwestern Syria.

An anonymous medical source reported that the latest clashes killed 800 HTS fighters and 200 Syrian Liberation Front fighters. An anonymous reporter from the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement reported that 600 fighters from both sides were captured.

The Ahrar al-Sham reporter said that most of the captives were arrested after raids and arrest campaigns in the camps of Northern Syria and the military checkpoints on the Aleppo-Damascus highway. He pointed out that the prisoners exchange will take place in Idlib and Aleppo.

A fighter of the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement, who was recently released from the HTS prisons, said that the latter released him and 65 others. The captive said that 85 people were kept in one room. Twenty fighters were released on Friday.

A private source in the Syrian Liberation Front said that they have 300 captives from the HTS and the latter has 180 captives from the Syrian Liberation Front and the Suqour al-Sham brigades. The source added that there are 40 civilians among the 180 captives, but the HTS considers them militants.

On Friday, the Syrian Liberation Front and the HTS proceeded the prisoners exchange in Southern Idlib. The prisoners exchange was part of the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between the two parties. The HTS released 21 fighters of the Syrian Liberation Front, and the latter released 26 fighters from the HTS.

On Apr. 24, the HTS decided on a permanent ceasefire with the Syrian Liberation Front and the Suqour al-Sham brigades. The agreement requires each party to remain in their controlled areas, stop arrests, and release the prisoners within a specific timeframe decided by the parties. The parties have also agreed to open blocked roads and remove checkpoints.

The Syrian Liberation Front and HTS have been clashing since early February. The clashes killed and injured civilians, and blocked traffic and trade. The clashes coincided with protests against the HTS to neutralize the cities and towns from the hostilities.
