Deir ez-Zor - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the militia of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces advanced near the Islamic State (ISIS)-controlled areas near the Syrian-Iraqi border in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, Eastern Syria, and clashes followed.

Activists said that "violent" clashes erupted between ISIS and the SDF fighters in the village of al-Baghouz, east of Abu Kamal city, 120 kilometers east of Deir ez-Zor, near the Iraqi-Syrian border, with no reports of casualties so far.

Earlier, a landmine planted by ISIS exploded in the village of Hasrat near Abu Kamal city, injuring a young man who was transported to a nearby medical center.

On Saturday, the SDF laid siege to the ISIS-controlled village of al-Baghouz, and a military source reported that only about 300 meters separated them from gaining control of the village. Activists said that the militia of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces advanced by two kilometers into Syrian territory to participate in the siege of the village.

Earlier, the SDF began to mobilize their forces towards Deir ez-Zor to initiate a military operation against ISIS as a part of the final stage of the al-Jazirah Storm military campaign, which the Deir ez-Zor Military Council announced earlier this month.
