Idlib - SMART

Everyday, sixty children benefit from the first permanent vaccine center in Jisr al-Shughur city, 30 kilometers west Idlib, Northern Syria. The Free Health Directorate of Idlib opened the center in cooperation with the Syrian Vaccine Team and some humanitarian organizations.

The general supervisor of the routine vaccine center, Muhammad Abu Ras, told SMART that the center covers the city of Jisr al-Shughur and its surrounding villages. The center receives 50 to 60 children every day and provides vaccines for: poliovirus, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, hepatitis, tetanus, diphtheria (low fever with sore throat), measles and rubella, for children aged between one day to five years.

Abu Ras explained that the vaccines are manufactured in factories and laboratories of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The center receives the vaccine with a special cooling chain.

Abu Ras stated that the cadres working in the center trained by the Health Directorate earlier, to become able to work in this field.

The center's official, Muhammad Attar, said that earlier in May, they opened the center in cooperation with the Health Directorate and OSO. He added that the center staff works throughout the week, two days inside the center and five outside it as mobile teams in the villages surrounding the city.

One of the beneficiaries said that the center saves a large number of people in the city and the surrounding villages, from having to spend the time, money and effort of having to travel to other areas for the vaccines, and it also protects children from infectious diseases.

At the end of February 2017, the Free Health Directorate opened four vaccine centers, two of them are located in Idlib in cooperation with the Syrian Vaccine Team, which tours the towns and villages of west Idlib to provide vaccines for children.
