Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, activists reported that skin diseases have spread dramatically in the Khawari area in Eastern Idlib near the Southern countryside of Aleppo, Northern Syria.

The activists appealed to humanitarian organizations in and outside of Syria to provide the necessary treatment. The activists stated that diseases currently spread more easily due to the increase of flies and mosquitoes, which is linked to the lack of pesticides in the region.

The director of the health center in the town of Khan Toman, Southern Aleppo, said that the center has received 155 people with leishmania from the countryside of Idlib and Southern Aleppo.

The director, Khallouf al-Muhammad, told SMART that the situation is bad because no one responsible for spraying pesticides. Al-Muhammad warned that the skin diseases are likely to spread.

Al-Muhammad called for the opening of permanent centers in the region to treat leishmania. He stressed the need to use pesticides to kill disease-spreading insects.

A health organization documented about 35,000 cases of leishmania in the countrysides of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama, Northern Syria, in March.

The leishmania disease has spread among the people of the villages, towns, and cities of Northern and Central Syria due to sewage leaks caused by breakdowns in sanitary installations, the spread of waste, and lack of care and health awareness.
