Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, Hussein Ibrahim al-Deghaim, the head of the local council in the city of Girgnaz in Idlib, Northern Syria, said that thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their homes and villages in the region after Turkey established observation bases in the area.

Al-Deghaim told SMART that the Turkish Army established two observation bases at Tal Touqan and al-Sarman, southeast of Idlib, leading to the return of the people to the area. People from other areas have also come in search of safety.

Al-Deghaim stated that about 400,000 people were displaced from the region because of the Syrian government and its allies' bombing before the establishment of the observation bases. Al-Deghaim stressed that most of the 400,000 people have returned now.

Al-Deghaim noted that the city of Girgnaz is currently host to 650 internally displaced families from Damascus and Rif Dimashq, in addition to IDPs from Eastern Idlib. Most of the IDPs reside in houses for free.

Al-Deghaim stated that the return of the displaced people to the region contributed to strengthen the local trade economy, especially in the month of Ramadan. Al-Deghaim also stressed that the Turkish Army assured that the region "will not be attacked by the Syrian government or its allies."

Turkey has established observation bases at the Qalat Jabal Sima'an in Aleppo, the villages of Salwa, al-Sarman, and Tal Touqan in Idlib and the town of Murak in Hama, as part of the eased escalation agreement reached at the Astana 6 talks.
