Aleppo - SMART

The Syrian government arrested several men from the Eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo, Northern Syria. The men were amongst those who had returned to their homes after the Syrian government seized the area.

On Sunday, the Syrian government forces launched an arrest campaign. The campaign included men between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. Some of them were recently released from the Syrian government prisons. Their fate and destination after arrest remains unknown.

The Syrian government forces have previously arrested internally displaced males from Eastern Aleppo to the al-Sulaymaniyah area, Aleppo, to enlist them to compulsory military service.

The Syrian government forces seized Aleppo on Dec. 22, 2016 (except the neighborhoods that are under the Kurdish People’s Protection Units control and the neighborhood of al-Rashideen on the western side of the city, which is controlled by the factions). The Syrian government seized control after deciding on an agreement that required the evacuation of civilians and fighters from the Eastern neighborhoods. The agreement took place after the Syrian government launched a military campaign supported by Russia. The campaign killed and injured thousands of civilians, in addition to destroying the infrastructure of the area.
