Aleppo - SMART

The Kurdish Democratic Union Party in Syria (Yekiti) urges the Kurdish Autonomous Administration (Rojova) to stop the corruption, favoritism and arbitrary detentions in the city of Ayn al-Arab (also known as Kobani) in Northeastern Aleppo, Northern Syria.

In a statement obtained by SMART, the Yekiti denounced Rojova officials for issuing licenses to merchants to construct buildings in the city's forest area. The Yekity said that it presented the executive office of the city's municipality with a document that proves that the forest area is public property; however, the office rejected the document.

The Yekiti department in Kobani appealed to the concerned parties to stop the "assaults" on public property and prevent the cutting down of trees in the forest, which is 30 years old. The organization also demanded an end to the arbitrary detention of citizens without warrants.

The Yekiti said that it ran in the elections to offer services and contribute to the reconstruction process and stability in the area, but it "has not see any sign of change." The party denounced the "irresponsible" practices and behaviors of some politicians, according to the statement.

Residential buildings and infrastructure in the city of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) were destroyed during the 2015 battles between the Kurdish People's Protection Units, backed by the International Coalition, and ISIS. The battles resulted in the expulsion of ISIS from the city.
