Daraa - SMART

Farmers in the Daraa governorate, Southern Syria, produce soft wheat for the first time, amidst an improvement in the production of hard wheat, compared to last year.

The manager of the Development Project Association, Mohammad Khoraibah, reported that this year's wheat crop reached 40,000 tons, compared to about 25,000 tons last year. The increase in production is the result of farming a larger area, according to Khoraibah.

Khoraibah also said that for the first time in Daraa, the association planted 100 acres of soft wheat, which is used in bread making, producing about 3 tons. Khoraibah added that the association will be capable of planting 1,000 acres next year.

The wheat crop increased despite an attack by several parasites, including sun bugs and stem sawflies, in addition to insufficient rain, which withered some crops.

Local officials and merchants from the areas outside Syrian government control in Daraa held a meeting to discuss the wheat production and how to provide the General Association of Grain with wheat after buying it from farmers.

Last month, the local council of Daraa decided to increase the price of bread in the areas under Free Syrian Army control by 25 Syrian pounds due to the lack of flour subsidies from the Watad organization.
