Turkey - SMART

The United States Ambassador for Disarmanent, Robert Wood, has said on Tuesday that the U.S. intends to withdraw from the Disarmaent Conference at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva as an act of protest against the Syrian government chairing the event.

Wood added that while the U.S. would not like to boycott the four-week event, it will do so in order to hold the Syrian government accountable for its use of chemical weapons in Syria (according to Reuters).

The Syrian government is to chair the United Nations Conference on Disarmament amid widespread calls to protest this in front of the conference venue and demands for other countries to boycott it.

The Conference on Disarmament was established in 1979. Consisting of a 65 state membership, the Conference meets three times a year, acting as a forum for the international community to discuss issues such as the disarmament of nuclear and chemical weapons.

The Security Council has repeatedly failed to vote for a draft resolution condemning the Syrian government for committing chemical weapons massacres in Syria, the latter of which have killed and wounded thousands of civilians in the past years. The Council's failure comes as a result of both Russia's continued use of veto power, and it's defense of the Syrian government's actions.
