Turkey - SMART

A local official in Afrin, Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria, said that the residents would inevitably leave if the military factions continue to “commit violations against the civilians.”

The official, who preferred not to be named for security reasons, said that the residents are figuring ways to leave the city, due to “the continuing violations, such as not allowing civilians to return to their homes, evicting others, banning the farmers from harvesting the corps, attacking civilians and requesting large amounts of money to let them return to their homes.”

He added that all the factions are committing violations in Afrin against the original and displaced residents.

He wondered how could the civil administration bodies handle the services and the government institutions since the factions do not allow the administration to adopt any resolution. He mentioned that “The bodies opened a butchery to stop killing animals within the public market. The Faylaq al-Sham closed the butchery.”

The official accused the Faylaq al-Sham of interfering with the Civil Bodies’ operations in the government institutions, the Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement of controlling civilian houses and the Ahrar al-Sharqiya of assaulting civilians and controlling their homes.

On Monday, the Jaysh al-Sharqiya faction, affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, sent eviction notices for internally displaced persons from Eastern Ghouta to leave the houses in which they live in the town of Jandires, Afrin.

Turkish forces operating in Afrin force the farmers to sell the wheat at specific prices, according to a farmer. The FSA expelled Kurdish families from their houses in the villages of Bazan and Karkalli, Sharan district. The FSA accused the families of belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

On March 18, the National Army, the Second and the third brigade factions, affiliated with the FSA, gained control over Afrin, without resistance from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units. The FSA also gained control over six districts, which are: Bulbol, Rajo, al-Sheikh Hadid, Sharan, Jandires, and Mabatli. On January 21, 2018, the FSA launched a military operation with the Turkish army, during which they gained control over the area.
