Daraa, SMART

On Tuesday, the Syrian government threatened to cut power if residents refuse to pay old electricity bills from preceding years in the cities of Tafas and Da’il, south and north Daraa in Southern Syria, respectively.

Nabil al-’asimi, head of the local council of Da’il city, reported that the Syrian government demanded six million Syrian pounds as a first payment of the city's assets from previous years. Al-’asimi added that the Syrian government demanded 18 million Syrian pounds from the city of Tafas.

A source reported that the Syrian government imposed money collection on the cities. The source added that the Syrian government dug their own water-wells in order to became self-sufficient in obtaining water without having to depend on it coming from opposition-held areas in exchange for electricity. The source added that the Syrian government electricity workers from Free Syrian Army-controlled areas forced every family to pay 2,000 Syrian pounds to cover the debts created by the elecrticity bills.

Local councils denied their involvement in the money collection and stated that this process is carried out by civil groups and electricity workers who are still receiving salaries from the Syrian government. The source said that the Syrian government could  also begin to impose collections on Western Daraa.

Local councils in the Daraa governorate repaired electricity line 66 following two days of cuts after gunmen damaged the electricity network.
