On Tuesday, the Syrian government recognized the autonomy of the regions of Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia, which belong to Georgia but are controlled by Russia. Georgia boycotted the Syrian government in response.

In 2008, separatists announced the regions as two independent states with Russian military support; however, the regions received no international recognition except from countries like Russia, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated that they agreed with the regions to exchange recognition and establish diplomatic relations on the level of embassy. The ministry added that the recognition "comes as a reward for the regions’ supporting positions against the terrorist assault on Syria," according to Syrian government media outlets.

David Dondua, the Georgian deputy foreign minister, stated that "the Syrian government’s recognition supports the Russian military aggression against Georgia, Russia’s illegal occupation of Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia, and the ethnic cleansing that has been ongoing for years."

The Syrian government adopts political positions compatible with the policies of Russia, which has provided political and media support for the Syrian government since the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011. Moscow has sent troops to defend the Syrian government since mid-2015 and tipped the power scales in Syria.
