Aleppo - SMART

Dozens of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Deir Ballout camp in the Jindayris area, 46 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, got diarrhea, amidst a lack of medical services such as doctors and ambulances.

Rami al-Sayed, a media activists and one of the IDPs at the camp, said that diarrhea spread among IDPs, especially children, as more than 100 cases have been reported until now. Al-Sayed added that sick IDPs were not transported to hospital firstly because the camp lacks ambulances and doctors, and second that the nearest hospital is located 5 to 8 kilometers away from the camp.

Al-Sayed also said that polluted water, lack of potable water, lack of hygiene, and public bathhouses all caused diarrhea and diseases to spread among IDPs.

Al-Sayed added that high temperatures during the summer months spoils food, causing flies and other insects spread in the camp. He added that the diarrhea cases have not been severe until now, but if they are not treated soon; they will lead to dehydration and maybe even death.

Al-Sayed said that the camp includes only medics, as one unspecialized doctor is available in another part of the camp, adding that they gave patients minerals and antidiarrhoeals. The patients did not recover after receiving these medicines, according to al-Sayed.

IDPs from Southern Damascus complained about the lack of support they have received since they entered the Abu al-Zendein passage near al-Bab. IDPs in all areas experience a lack of support being provided by relief organizations.

Earlier, the Turkish authorities prevented convoys of IDPs from entering al-Bab, saying that there is no room for them and that no one has coordinated with the Turkish government. Turkey reversed its decisions and allowed some of the convoys to enter due to demonstrations and public demand, but also prevented other convoys from entering the areas controlled by them.
