Turkey, SMART

On Tuesday, Nurettin Canikli, Turkish defense minister stated that Turkish and American officials would meet in Germany to discuss the plan about the fate of the city of Manbij, east of Aleppo in Northern Syria.

In early June 2018, Washington and Ankara reached an agreement about Manbij. Ankara said that the agreement aims to expel the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.

Canikli added that Turkish and American troops would supervise the YPG fighters evacuation from Manbij. Canikli noted that Ankara and Washington would choose the participants in the local administration of Manbij.

Canikli stated,”My American counterpart, James Mattis confirmed to me that there would be no delay in the agreement implementation, and Washington believes that it is essential to form a civil administration council in Manbij, which reflects the pre-war population structure of the city.

Turkish- American relationships have been on tension since the Syrian Democratic Forces lead by the YPG gained control over the city of Manbij in mid-2016 following battles with the Islamic State (ISIS). The American led International Coalition supported the SDF against ISIS.

Mevlut Cavic Oglu, Turkish foreign minister, stated that the Manbij agreement would be applied to the entire areas controlled by the SDF in Northeastern Syria.
