Turkey - SMART

On Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expressed their hope that Lebanon retracts its decision to freeze the residency applications for UNHCR's international staff in Lebanon.

Last week, the Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil ordered the freezing of all residency applications of international staff of UNHCR in Lebanon. Baseel reported that the reason behind the decision is that the U.N. "hinders Syrian refugees' return to Syria by intimidating them."

Andrej Mahecic, the UNHCR spokesperson, stated that they are concerned about the decision and hopes that Lebanon "reverses the decision without delay." Mahecic noted that the U.N. does not discourage the return of Syrians or prevent those who want to return, saying, "We respect the rights of refugees to decide freely and for themselves on returning home."

Mahecic warned against the military escalation in Syria in recent months, saying, "Given the general situation, we do not think that the current conditions in Syria are suitable for refugees to return."

One million Syrian refugees live in Lebanon, but the Lebanese government say that the Syrian refugees make a significant economic and social burden. The Lebanese government calls upon the U.N. and other states involved in Syria to facilitate the Syrian refugees' return.
