Daraa - SMART

On Tuesday, the Syrian government forces shelled the al-Lajat area and the Northeastern Daraa countryside in Southern Syria. The shelling killed two civilians and injured others.

A local source in the town of Nahita (30 kilometers northeast of Daraa) reported that Syrian government rocket and artillery shelling hit the town, killing two civilians. The source noted that the shelling came from the al-Thu’la military airbase in the adjacent as-Suwayda governorate, which is controlled by the Syrian government.

The Civil Defense reported that the rocket shelling on the town killed one of their volunteers who was in the process of rescuing injured people.

The Civil Defense added on Facebook that the Syrian government forces shelled the towns of Asem, Masika, Jisri, and al-Bustan using 100 missiles. The shelling injured five members of a family in Asem. The Civil Defense transported the injured to nearby field hospitals.

Activists reported that Syrian government rocket shelling hit the town of al-Gharia al-Gharbia, injuring two civilians with minor injuries.

The Civil Defense noted that unidentified warplanes bombed the town of Masika in the al-Lajat area six times. A rocket shelling hit the town of Busr al-Harir, causing no injuries.

Syrian government heavy artillery forces shelled the al-Daraa al-Balad neighborhoods in the city of Daraa.

On Monday, the Syrian government forces advanced to the Haran Battalion base, east of Daraa. The Free Syrian Army factions attacked the Syrian government forces, killing and injuring some of the government forces' members. The Syrian government forces sent military reinforcements to outposts in the area as civilians evacuated for fear of a large-scale ground attack.

Medical staff in the Daraa governorate, Southern Syria, raised the alert to receive injured Free Syrian Army fighters following expectations of a potential Syrian government military campaign in the area.

Last summer, Russia, Jordan, and the United States reached a de-escalation agreement in the Daraa and Quneitra governorates in Southern Syria. The Syrian government forces mobilized troops to regain control over the opposition factions’ outposts in the governorates.
