Turkey - SMART

Oqab Yahia, a member of the political body of the Syrian National Coalition, said that Turkish Opposition Leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu statements about the necessity of returning Syrian refugees to their country is just a publicity within the “electoral battle.” He stressed that the circumstances will not allow their return.

Yahia said that it is still early for Syrians to return to their county. He pointed out that the Syrian Government bombing is continuing in the areas from which the refugees escaped, especially Idlib.

He added that the Syrians are still not convinced of the possibility to return. The refugees are not able to return to the Syrian government-controlled areas, because of the arresting forced reconciliation campaigns.

Yahia added that the civilians need decent circumstances to return to Syria and that pressuring them to return to Syria is considered forcing.

Yahia said that the Turkish opposition leader aims to use these slogans in the Turkish electoral battle. The opposition leader is presenting new goals, against the policies and procedures issued by the ruling Justice and Development Party.

Yahia talked about Kilicdaroglu objection to granting Turkish citizenship for Syrians. He stressed that citizenship is a right for any person who reside in a certain country for five years. He pointed out that Turkey is benefitting from choosing the diploma holders or investors.

Yahia considered granting Turkish citizenship for Syrians is different than the Syrian Government approaches by granting Syrian citizenship for Iranians and Hezbollah militias. The Syrian Government is attempting to impose a demographic change, by giving citizenship for people from a certain religion.

Kilicdaroglu stated that Syrian refugees should return to their county, he said “Syria had war and clashes,” he added that he does not think granting refugees the Turkish citizenship is right.

Earlier, the Lebanese President Michel Aoun demanded Syrian refugees to return to their countries, without waiting for the political transition. Jubran basil, the Lebanese Foreign Minister, demanded suspending the residency applications of U.N. employees in Lebanon, because they are “hindering the return of Syrian Refugees."
