Syrian Democratic Forces reach Iraqi border after clashes with Islamic State in al-Hasakah

Al-Hasakah - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reach the Syrian-Iraqi border after clashes with the Islamic State (IS) in Southern al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria.

Activists reported that SDF fighters clashes with the Iraqi Forces and the 29th brigade, which is affiliated with the Iraqi al-Hashd al-Shaabi militia, after the SDF gained control over the Tal Sufuk crossing. No casualties were reported.

SDF media reported earlier that the SDF are six kilometers from the Syrian-Iraqi border after gaining control over al-Ziba.

An SDF military source reported that they will announce gaining control over the the IS-controlled areas in al-Hasakah within the next few hours. He pointed out that they are advancing toward the city of al-Hajin in Deir ez-Zor.

On June 17, the SDF gained control over the town of al-Dashisha during the second round of battles against the IS. The SDF later gained control over the villages of al-Khobara and Abu Hamda.

On May 1, 2018, the Deir ez-Zor military council of the SDF announced the beginning of the last stage of the al-Jazeera Storm campaign against the IS.
