Al-Hasakah - SMART

The The Kurdish Autonomous Administration reactivates a passenger-freight train in al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria. The administration has limited support to renovate tracks and train carts.

The Railway official of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, Fawaz al-Mushref, said that they were able to renovate 50 kilometers of the railway between al-Qamishli and the town of Tal Kojar, in addition to renovating two American-made cars, after “bitter efforts.”

Al-Mushref added that the Kurdish Autonomous Administration’s support includes oil, lubricant, and necessary tools, and that only 18 people are working on renovating the train.

He pointed out that four passenger cars are ready, in addition to another for gas, goods and cattle within the city. He added that the first stage is to activate the al-Qamishli-Tal Kojar line, and later to al-Hasakah.

He added that the train is locally known as the Suburbs Train. The train stopped working during the past six years due to the lack of support and stealing parts of the railway.

The Kurdish Autonomous Administration and its forces, of which the Kurdish People’s Protection Units is the most notable, gained control over al-Hasakah. This facilitated moving on land, in addition to launching flights between the al-Qamishli airport and the Syrian Government-controlled Damascus International airport.
