Turkey, SMART

On Tuesday, the Opposition Negotiation Committee of the Riyadh Conference 2 called the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent session in order to discuss the Syrian government forces’ military campaign in the Daraa governorate, Southern Syria.

The committee posted a statement on Twitter calling to halt the military campaign at once, considering the campaign a violation of the UN Security Council resolution 2254, and specifying the responsibilities of the permanent state members for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement in Syria.

The committee condemned the silence of the UN Security Council, which gave up its lawful and political responsibilities for protecting Syrians, and has stopped calling upon the Syrian government to end using force and internally prohibited weapons against civilians.

The committee accused Russia, the United States, and Jordan, which are the guarantors of the de-escalation agreement in Southern Syria of giving up their responsibilities for protecting Syrians. The committee added that the three countries allow the Syrian government forces to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The Russian backed Syrian government forces and foreign loyalist militias launch a military campaign in the Northern and Eastern Daraa governorate, Southern Syria, which is included in the de-escalation agreement. The campaign displaced thousands of civilians.
