Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, the Syrian government said that it plans to import 1.5 million tonnes of wheat in 2018, mostly from Russia.

The Internal Trade Minister of the Syrian government, Abdullah al-Gharbi, said that most of the imports will be from Russia, but the Syrian government is also looking to buy Romanian and Bulgarian wheat. Al-Gharbi added, "The local buying season is still in its beginning." He expected that local wheat purchases will range between 500,000 to 600,000 tons, according to Reuters.

According to al-Gharbi, the Syrian government has strategic reserves of wheat sufficient for more than eight months.

Before the Syrian revolution seven years ago, Syria was a wheat exporter with production up to 4 million tonnes a year when the crop was abundant, and capable of exporting 1.5 million tonnes.

Over the last few years, Syria's wheat production has declined to reach 1.3 tonnes in 2016.

In recent months, the Syrian government has shelled hundreds of dunums of farmland planted with wheat in areas outside its control, such as Northern Hama and Aleppo countryside. The shelling burned the farmland and caused large losses to farmers. The civil and military bodies in the areas of Daraa, which is controlled by the factions, blocked wheat from entering the Syrian government areas.
