Turkey - SMART

Members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) agreed by majority to a British-led proposal to give the organization more powers to identify those responsible for internationally banned toxic materials attacks.

On Tuesday, Britain said that Russia, Iran, and Syria had sought to block a proposal by several Western countries to strengthen the authority of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons by identifying those responsible for launching lethal weapons.

The United States and the European Union supported the proposal. However, Russia, Iran and the Syrian government and its allies opposed the plan, according to Reuters.

Reuters quoted two diplomatic sources as saying that the approval came by an overwhelming majority. The vote of the members of the Security Council in favor of the proposal was 82 votes in favor and to 24 against it.

The Syrian government used toxic gas in several locations in Idlib, Northern Syria, Hama and Homs, Central Syria, and Eastern Ghouta, Damascus. The international community was only condemning, amid calls from humanitarian and human rights organizations to put an end to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
