Al-Quneitra - SMART

The local council of the town of al-Rafid in al-Quneitra, Southern Syria, declares their incapacity to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Daraa due to the lack of financial resources.

Al-Rafid council stated that 1,000 families, mostly women and children, have arrived in the town of al-Rafid and the nearby villages since the beginning of the Syrian government's military campaign in Southern Syria.

The council added that 1,500 displaced families have arrived from Rif Dimashq and Daraa in the past five years, increasing the population and causing humanitarian difficulties in the area.

The local council of al-Rafid is one of the least financially able councils in Southern Syria. The council does not receive any financial support and operates according to their budget. The council has announced the town al-Rafid a disaster zone.

Hundreds of displaced families from Daraa suffer in poor living conditions as camps struggle to accommodate the large number of people.

Last week, the Syrian government launched a military operation in Eastern Daraa and Western as-Suwayda, bombing the region intensively. The bombing has killed and injured dozens of civilians so far, including women and children. The Syrian government is advancing and thousands of civilians have been displaced from their homes.
