Daraa - SMART

Local sources reported that the Syrian government detained internally displaced families from the areas outside Syrian government control, banning them from entering their areas in Daraa, Southern Syria.

The sources added that the Syrian government forces set up tents near the Khirbat Ghazala checkpoint, which divides the government-controlled and the Free Syrian Army (FSA)-controlled areas. The Syrian government detained the families in the tents pending a decision.

The sources added the the Syrian government is likely to move the families to a shelter in the town of Jbab, or use them as “human shields during the battles.”

The Syrian government forces expanded their military operations in the governorate of Daraa and have reached the city of Daraa. The government forces reported that they started a cover operation while their forces in the Southeastern section of Daraa advanced toward the Silos road.

Last week, the Syrian government launched a military campaign on Eastern and Northern Daraa. The campaign coincided with intense aerial and artillery bombing. The bombing killed and injured dozens of civilians, including women and children, and destroyed infrastructure. Thousands of civilians have been displaced from their villages, while the Syrian government forces advance in the area.
