Hama - SMART

The residents of Mourek, 27 kilometers north of Hama, Central Syria, in cooperation with the local council, renovated the pistachio market after closing it for more than six years. The market was closed due to the continuing Syrian Government bombing.

Abdul-Salam al-Qasem, an employee in the agricultural office of the local council, said that the municipality owns the market. He pointed out that the local council signed contracts with the investors to establish shops in low annual rent, to encourage the traders.

Al-Qasem added that the farmers could not harvest the pistachio for six years, because there were Syrian Government bases near there farms, which causes danger. After the Turkish Army established a control point, they were able to harvest pistachios this year.

Turkey established the control point in the area on April 7, 2018. After establishing the point, hundreds of families returned to the city, under the de-escalation agreement.

The pistachio market was established more than 13 years ago in Mourek. The city is famous for its pistachio. The Syrian Government continuing bombing destroyed the market.
