Idlib - SMART

On Saturday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a large-scale raid campaign in the town of Maasran, 30 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria, and arrested a number of persons formerly affiliated with the Islamic State or who have precedents in criminal cases.

A local source told SMART that about 20 vehicles carrying HTS members entered the town after surrounding it in four directions, and arrested eight people in it.

The source added that the campaign targeted former ISIS members, people accused of planting explosive devices, and people who have precedents in theft cases.

Activists from the area reported that intense gunfire was heard in coincidence with the campaign. Military observatories circulated to residents to stay indoors and not to leave.

This campaign came after HTS announced that it gained control of the entire city of Sarmin, east of Idlib, as part of a security crackdown against cells belonging to ISIS, killing and capturing a number of ISIS members. Other ISIS members managed to escape the city.

The HTS has imposed a curfew in the city of Sarmin, coinciding with the spread of its security and military forces in the region. The HTS agreed with the city's Shura Council on the formation of a joint executive force to oversee the raids. However, the HTS then announced cancellation of the agreement due to "the inability of the city's leaders to bind ISIS cells."
