Turkey - SMART

The United Nations Refugee Agency in Jordan said that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled from Daraa, Southern Syria, reached 160,000. The IDPs fled Daraa due to the attack of the Syrian government's forces, supported by foreign militias and Russian air force.

Muhamad Hawari, a UNHCR spokesman, said that the number of IDPs has tripled, adding that the numbers are likely to increase during the night due to the ongoing battles in the area.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, called for an immediate end to the military escalation in Daraa, and a return to ceasefire arrangements agreed by Russia, the United States and Jordan.

Over the last days, the Syrian government's forces, supported by forging militias and Russian air force, launched a military campaign on Daraa, which is included in the de-escalation agreement. The military campaign killed and injured dozens of civilians and forced tens of thousands of people to flee. The Syrian government forces' checkpoints were accused of forcing IDPs to pay hundreds of dollars to exit Daraa.
