Idlib - SMART

On Monday, a military commander in the Free Syrian Army (FSA) reported that the FSA expects the Syrian government to launch a military campaign in Idlib, Northern Syria, after completing its military operations in Daraa, Southern Syria.

The military commander of the Jaysh al-Nasr, Mohammed al-Shamali, told SMART, “The Syrian government has no covenant or charter, and according to expectations and after the completion of operations in Daraa, it will try to advance in Idlib, probably from the western countryside. The Syrian government has recently bombed villages and residential areas in the area, to displace its people and start a military operation."

About three weeks ago, the Syrian government forces and their allies launched a military campaign in the governorate, killing and wounding of dozens of civilians, and displacing tens of thousands. The campaign ended when the FSA factions of Southern Syria reached a ceasefire agreement with Russia.

The ceasefire agreement includes the governorate of Daraa except its northwestern countryside. Opposition fighters who refuse to sign the agreement have to go to Northern Syria. The agreement also called for the handing over of the entire border with Jordan and the management of the Naseeb border crossing to the Syrian government.

Al-Shamali added that the Syrian government will face fierce resistance in the event of advancing in Idlib, and that the opposition factions there are working to establish lines of defense and the necessary fortifications in anticipation of an attack.

Al-Shamali explained that the opposition factions in the region are the components of the National Liberation Front, incluing the al-Nasr Army, the Idlib Army, the Sham Corps, the First Coastal Division, the Second Coastal Division, and others.

Al-Shamali confirmed that loyalist forces shell areas in western Idlib using rockets, mortars, and tanks,  on a daily basis from their bases in the countryside of Latakia, Western Syria, and the countryside of Hama, Central Syria.

Al-Shamali added that Turkey is present in the region as an observer to the de-escalation agreement, and documents the violations for the military leadership in Ankara, to be discussed in the Astana talks. Al-Shamali also added, “They (Turkey), of course, oppose any shelling from the regime and pledge to continue to deal with it.”

The governorate of Idlib is part of the de-escalation agreement, which was signed by the sponsors of the Astana talks (Turkey, Russia, and Iran.) On Sunday, the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad threatened that his forces will launch a military attack on Northern Syria in the event of no reconciliation.
