Idlib - SMART

On Thursday, two sources said that Turkey has given assurances  that it will protect the people of the Idlib governorate in Northern Syria. The assurances came after news spread that the Syrian government and Russia together intend to storm the governorate and begin a military operation there.

The elected commander of the Sham Corps of the Free Syrian Army, Omar Hudhayfah, told SMART that Turkey gave assurances to the people of Idlib that it will protect the governorate, which is located at its border with Syria. Hudhayfah said, "Turkey will not stay silent about any attack from the regime" and that, "the regime can not apply the Daraa scenario in Idlib due to the difference between the real Turkish guarantor and those who claim to be the guarantors of Daraa, namely Jordan and Saudi Arabia."

Hudhayfah explained that the Syrian government and its allies use the method of threatening the governorate to intimidate the people and control them without incurring any loss. Hudhayfah called on the military factions to step up readiness in case of any possible attack by the Syrian government, and to immediately respond to counter-combats.

The head of the local council in the town of Jirjanaz, south of Idlib, Hussein al-Deghaim, said that the Turkish forces stationed at the observation base near the town underestimated the news about the intentions of the Syrian government forces and Russia to storm Idlib.

Al-Deghaim added that the Turkish forces gave the people assurances to protect them during their visit to its observation base near the town a few days ago. During the meeting with them, Turkey said, "Russia will not end the de-escalation agreement. It is not in Russia's interests to return from its military actions in Aleppo to Idlib, Northern Hama and the countryside of Latakia."

Al-Deghaim added, "The Turkish forces do not see any threats on Idlib and consider that this can not happen in their presence. And the airstrikes on the governorate are caused by the harassment of the extremists and the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on the regime."

The residents of Idlib are afraid of the Syrian government's invasion of the region after an intense bombing campaign has returned to the governorate, and also after Syrian government's seizure of Daraa under the Russian agreement.

On Friday, the Syrian Civil Defense expressed its concern that the Russians would commit a "crime" in the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man after the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria claimed that it received information that the Civil Defense is preparing for "provocative action" using chemicals.

The Idlib governorate is included in the de-escalation agreement signed by the sponsors of the Astana talks (Turkey, Russia and Iran). Many Turkish and Russian military bases are already established in the governorate to monitor the agreement.
