Turkey - SMART

On Monday, the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the United States President Donald Trump agreed that the disengagement agreement signed in 1974 between Syria and Israel should be enforced.

During a joint press conference with President Trump in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, President Putin said that Southern Syria must be brought back to settlement in order for peace to prevail.

Earlier on July 11, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Russian president that he suspects Syria to follow the disengagement agreement strictly.

Israel and Syria signed the disengagement agreement on May 31, 1974, in sponsorship of the United Nations and attendance of representatives of the United States and the Soviet Union. The agreement included creating a demilitarized zone with a width of 20 kilometers on both the Syrian and the Israeli sides, observed by United Nations forces. The agreement also prevented Syria from deploying anti-aircraft missile launchers to Syrian areas 25 kilometers from the Israeli border.

Putin said that maintaining peace would be an example of the successful mutual efforts of Russia and the US, adding that if the two countries cooperate to support the Syrian refugees in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, and help them return to Syria, the two countries would help ease the pressure on the European Union countries. Putin also pointed out that a day earlier, he, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the US President, Donald Trump, agreed to offer support to the Syrian people.

Trump said that the US and Russia are interested in Israel's security, adding that the Syrian case is "very complicated" and that the two countries are collaborating to save lives.

Trump emphasized that the US will not allow Iran to benefit from the success of destroying the Islamic State, as Russia destroyed 90 percent of the terrorist organization.

Recently, several Israeli officials' statements attacked Iran and the Syrian government, as a distinguished Israeli official threatened to eliminate the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and end his government. Earlier, the Israeli Prime Minister said, "It is best to confront Iran soon."
