Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, a Sharia judge belonging to the Guardians of Religion group, which is part of al-Qaeda, survived an assassination attempt by unknown gunmen in the city of Saraqib, 16 kilometers east of Idlib, Northern Syria.

Activists said that unknown gunmen shot the judge, Abu Abdullah al-Hader, who is the imam of the al-Rawdah mosque in Saraqib, as he headed to do the Fajr prayers, severely injuring him.

Activists said that after shooting the judge, masked persons attempted to run him over with their car before fleeing the scene. The judge was transported to a medical center in the city.

The Guardians of Religion is led by Abu Humam al-Shami, and was established in late February, 2018, by several factions that pledge to al-Qaeda, including the al-Badiyah Army, the al-Sahil Army, the Kabul military company, the al-Sahil military companies, the al-Malahim Army and the Jund al-Sharia faction.

Explosive devices and car bomb explosions are common in Idlib, in addition to kidnappings and assassination attempts by unknown gunmen or bombers.
