Aleppo - SMART

The farmers in the city of Atarib, 30 kilometers west of Aleppo, Northern Syria, use solar energy to irrigate their fields due to the power cuts and the high fuel prices.

Mohammad Saber, the director of the Buraq solar power company, told SMART that the solar panels provide enough electricity to pump five cubic meters of water per hour, which is enough to irrigate more than one hectare of farmlands by industrial drip.

Saber added that the irrigation of farmlands requires more than 160 panels without the need for batteries, adding that some solar panels reach up to 160 watts.

The farmer Ahmed Abu Sham said that the cost of buying 16 panels is about 5,000 US dollars with an electric power of up to 15 amperes. Abu Sham added that alternative energy is an ideal solution in the absence of electricity 24/7.

Syrians living in areas outside Syrian government control suffer from power cuts that sometimes continue for months, as a result of the Syrian government and Russian bombing on infrastructure, including electricity, forcing the residents to use generators.
