Idlib, SMART

On Wednesday, buses entered the Syrian government-controlled towns of Kafarya and al-Fou’a, 5 kilometers north of Idlib, Northern Syria, to evacuate residents and fighters as part of an agreement between the Syrian government and the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

A SMART reporter stated that on Wednesday morning, 121 buses entered the towns from al-Souaghia to evacuate residents and loyalist militias fighters. The reporter noted that a totale of 6,900 people, including fighters, are to be evacuated,

The evacuation comes as a part of HTS's agreement with Iran to evacuate all residents from the besieged towns, in return for the release of 1,500 prisoners and dozens of military captives from Syrian government prisons.

A well-informed source reported that Iran agreed on negotiating with the HTS following the latter's intention to launch a military campaign against the towns. The source noted that the negotiations took place through phone calls between the two sides.

Earlier, the HTS reached agreements with the Syrian government over the fate of the two towns; however, the most recent agreement includes the evacuation of some residents from the towns, in return for the evacuation to Idlib for the HTS fighters in the al-Yarmouk camp.
